The termination process varies from carrier to carrier, and group to group, and could also vary depending on your COBRA administrator.

If it is not a COBRA-qualified termination:

  • The employee's "Employment Status" will change from "Active" to "Inactive" on the coverage end date, indicated when that employee was terminated from the system.
  • This termination information will need to be communicated to the carriers if we do not have EDI connectivity.

If it is a COBRA-qualified termination:
  • The employee's "Employment Status" will change from "Active" to "COBRA Pending" on the coverage end date, indicated when that employee was terminated in the system.
  • This termination information will need to be communicated to both the carrier and the COBRA administrator. Maxwell does not administer COBRA, therefore COBRA enrollment processing is determined by your COBRA administrator.
  • The employee's status will remain "COBRA Pending" until it is manually changed to either "COBRA" or "Inactive" based on their selection. "Employment Status" can be changed within the details of that specific employee.
